As soon as Mark & Greg told me they wanted to incorporate LEGO into their summer wedding at Park Winters, I knew we were going to be a good fit. One of my favorite things as a wedding planner is to bring the couple’s personal interests into their wedding design!
Another thing I absolutely loved about this wedding was the COLOR! They planned to wear Hawaiian shirts for their ceremony, with a wardrobe change to a different Hawaiian print for the reception. With that in mind, they asked their guests to wear bright colors (and light fabrics, because let’s be honest, it’s HOT in Sacramento in July). They also wanted to bring a tropical vibe to their florals, which Strelitzia Flower Company delivered on, big time. Birds of Paradise were a focal point of all the live flower arrangements—and even in the LEGO table centerpieces.
Color didn’t end with the florals though. Their cake designer, Kellie Velasquez of Palette Cakes, created a drop-dead gorgeous blue cake with ruffled trim and colorful sugar flower accents. Everything on the cake is edible. Kellie’s specialty is elaborate, so-real-you-can’t-believe-they’re-sugar flowers and fruit elements. And the best part is that the sugar flowers will last indefinitely if you protect them from breakage.
Kellie also prepared a selection of her fabulous desserts, as well as shortbread cookie favors that were wrapped in cellophane and placed at guests’ seats.
The couple also prepared gift bags for their youngest guests—complete with coloring books & crayons and their very own LEGO kits. Keeping the kiddos occupied always goes a long way toward making the event more enjoyable for their parents (and everyone else).
This wedding was such a joy to be part of, and I encourage all couples to incorporate as many personal touches as they can to make their wedding as much “them” as Mark & Greg’s was!
